August 20 in Hungary
August 20 is St. Stephen’s Day, one of the biggest national holidays in Holidays.
Because of this, most stores will be closed and there will be events going on in the city centre. The public transport should work as usual. Please plan your day accordingly.
Here you can find some more information about the celebrations: https://www.budapestbylocals.com/august-20th/
Venue
Hungarian Research Centre for Linguistics. Benczúr u. 33, 1068. Budapest. Hungary (map)
Local transport
Budapest has a convenient system of public transport. We suggest using either Google maps or the official public transport website (BKK) to plan your journey. Note that at night (from around 00:30 to 4:30) there are regular night buses.
Information about the transport tickets (within Budapest): https://bkk.hu/en/tickets-and-passes/prices/
Hungarian train system operates separately and is called MÁV. Information about the train tickets: https://jegy.mav.hu/jegy/vonat
Taxis
The main taxi company in Budapest is called Főtaxi. You can check their website and/or use their app. Very likely, you will need to pay in cash. We strongly advise you against trying to flag a taxi on the street.
Uber does not operate in Hungary.
Transport from the airport
To get from the airport to the city centre you can use public transport.
Bus 100E goes directly to Deák Ferenc tér. Note that this bus requires a special “airport” ticket. You can buy it in the same ticket machine as a normal ticket but it costs more, 2200 HUF. The ride takes about 30 mins.
You can also use bus 200E to get to the closest metro station, Kőbánya-Kispest M, and from there take metro line 3 to the city centre. You will need either two normal tickets or a single 90 mins ticket (750 HUF). The ride to Deák Ferenc tér takes about 1 h.
(Especially if you are going from the airport to the dormitory) you can take bus 200E to the closest train station, Ferihegy 1, and from there take a train to the Zugló station. You will need a normal BKK ticket for the bus and a train MÁV ticket for the train, which you can buy at the train station. The ride to Zugló takes about 1 h.
There is also a shuttle service. Please check their website:

Currency
The local currency is Hungarian forint (HUF). The current exchange rate is c. 390-400 HUF for one euro. Most places accept cards (including smaller stores and ticket machines). Some big supermarkets in the city centre may accept euros (cash), but that is rather an exception.
